Description
Here is the pattern for the popular toy censer. This pattern enables you to make the censer with or without bells outside, but not with bells inside. There are full instructions and a grand total of 28 color photographs to make the construction process as easy to understand as possible.
Gold-colored yarn is crocheted around foam hemispheres to hold the shape. The “chains” come together at the top to form a loop convenient for hanging. Nine bells are stitched in place at regular intervals. [Note: the photographs will show six bells because I originally made the censer with six bells. I have changed it to nine to reflect the updated censer design.] The censer is constructed such that a one-inch space exists between the top and bottom halves. This allows a “charcoal” to be inserted or removed.
Skills needed: magic loop, slip stitch, chain stitch, single crochet, half-double crochet, double crochet, basic stitching.
Finished product dimensions: 13 inches fully-extended, 3 1/2 inches across at widest point. This will vary slightly because of individual variations in crocheting.
As soon as you complete the purchase you can download the pattern in PDF form. Purchasing this listing allows you to access it twice for downloading purposes. It will not be permanently accessible online, so make sure you do download it onto the device of your choice.
If you have questions or need clarification while making the censer, please don’t hesitate to contact me and ask! (cozyhousecurios@gmail.com] To date, no one has been unable to complete the pattern, even beginners.
[I also offer the censer as a finished product.]

I found this adorable pattern just a few days before Pascha. Perfect for my toddler granddaughter to participate in this year’s home services! The directions are clear & thorough, with lots of photos. Even a novice crocheter will have success with this. I used what I had on hand—gold wool worsted (fire resistant in case our small person accidentally gets too exuberant near the candles) and a hand-shaped styrofoam insert. Skipped the charcoal for now, since for a 2-year old the excitement is in swinging the censer with BELLS. 😉 We’ll add it next year. Thank you for offering this pattern! It added joy for everyone this Pascha-in-the-desert. 😘

I’m so glad you liked the pattern and the finished censer! I tried to make the pattern as easy as possible to follow so it would be useable by the wisest possible range of crocheters.

Super fun pattern! Good instructions, clear pictures that beautifully complement the text – a simple, easy pattern, but not boring at all! Am almost finished with my second, hoping to make four or five for St Nicholas gifts for children, godchildren, and friends. My husband’s remark when I showed him the first was “That’s a great start!” Clearly it wasn’t finished because there were only six bells. 😆 If I end up with enough bells, I may do the more proper twelve bells for the twelve apostles, but I like the visual balance of only six for the size.
